The Thing About Story is…

The Thing About Story is a combination of words on the internet (commonly called a newsletter or blog) focused on parsing through the fundamentals of story.

What is story?

I know, I know. What kind of question is that? But I think it’s worth asking because I believe story is much bigger than a lot of people give it credit for. Depending on the circumstance, you can call it narrative, fable, history, memoir, rhetoric, conspiracy, self-talk, music, etc. But no matter what you call it, story can be used for anything from peaceful escape to manipulation, proliferating lies to getting people to buy cars, sharing news to teaching complex ideas… you get the idea.

If I were a toddler at the fair and story was chewed gum, this newsletter would be me looking under every shoe, table, counter, trash can, Skee-Ball ramp, lap bar, and corn dog1 plate to see what’s out there, what tastes the best, and what else I find along the way.

Who is The Thing About Story for?

Let’s use another little tool of story to explain this. If the intangible idea of story were, instead, a tangible thing like water, this newsletter would be for

In general, I think anyone who enjoys watching, writing, hearing, reading, telling, or living a good story will find something valuable.
